WorldPlay: Traditional Music of the World at Hill Center - Dr. Nader Majd and the Chakavak Ensemble

Hill Center, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, Washington. D.C., which is 1 block from the Eastern Market Metro station.

Persian classical music dates back to the fifth century B.C. and continues to inspire listeners today. The music is rich in structure, comprising melodic tones combined with a bounty of colorful rhythms. Dr. Nader Majd and Chakavak Ensemble bring the ancient sounds of Persia to Hill Center with a performance of Persian classical music. Mary Cliff of WAMU's Traditions will moderate a discussion with the musicians to kick off the performance.

An Iranian musician and scholar, Dr. Majd was born in Iran in 1944, and has been studying and performing music since his childhood, learning both theory and practice from his father and uncles who were also dedicated musicians. Dr. Nader specializes in playing and teaching the tar, setar, santur, violin, and voice. He has participated in many concerts and TV shows in Iran and abroad, produced a number of audio and video tapes, and taught music in the USA for the past ten years.

Dr. Majd is the director of The Center for Persian Classical Music (CPCM) in Fairfax, Virginia. CPCM teaches Iranian traditional and folk music, and sponsors concert performances, publication of books, musical audios and videos, newsletters, art exhibitions, and Persian handicrafts.
