Grapevine Storytelling with Carolina Quiroga and Kona Morris (08 Apr 2026)

No pre-registration needed for in-person, but if you register at https://fsgw.org/grapevine you will have access to the live stream and the recorded show for later.

You will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link as well as a reminder of the date, time, and location. We ask for donations to support our tellers, suggested $20 per person (feel free to give more!). The Grapevine is spoken word performance for adults and teens, celebrating the timeless art of the story, hosted by storytellers Renée Brachfeld and Tim Livengood.

ABOUT OUR TELLERS:

Kona Morris is a storyteller, writer, and educator. With equal parts humor and heart, she tells true stories of her extraordinary adventures and lessons learned. Kona has won The Moth StorySLAM in NYC, LA, and Boston, and she came in first place at the Ojai Storytelling Festival. She was featured on Stories From The Stage (PBS) and the RISK! podcast. Kona teaches story crafting workshops to inspire others to share their stories. More about Kona

Carolina Quiroga is a storyteller from Colombia who came to the U.S. for grad school and ended up with a husband, a Southern drawl, and a lot of stories. She mixes humor, heart, and a dash of cultural confusion to tell tales about identity, language, and what it really means to belong. If you have not previously attended a Wednesday night English country dance at Glen Echo, you may select "first time free" when registering. New dancers are welcome. If you have no previous English country dance experience or would like a refresher, please arrive at around 7:30 for a lesson.

Nametags - if you pre-register by Wednesday, April 8th, we will print a name button for you that you can pick up at the dance!

Registration is required of all participants. Pre-registration is preferred--you may pay online or wait to pay at the door. You may register at the door. Cash and credit cards are accepted at the door. Registrations may be cancelled prior to the event, and any payment will be refunded as a credit for future use. No refunds will be available after the event has started.

The monthly Song Circle provides a daytime opportunity to enjoy delightful songs, old or new, humorous or serious, timeless or topical. Free!

Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience. Come for informal group singing or just to listen, in person or via Zoom.

With income taxes due on April 15 and Earth Day on April 22, bring or request your favorite Spring songs, songs about taxes or the environment, or any other songs!

If you wish to request particular songs, it helps to keep the singing going if you let us know well in advance using the registration form linked here.

Elizabeth Rosenberg and Joe Whitesell will lead songs with guitar accompaniment, and any participant may lead any song, a cappella or self-accompanied.

The Song Circle will be held in person at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring, MD 20901. Plenty of free parking!

In-person attendees should read and follow FSGW's Respiratory Virus Guidelines.

All are welcome to the 2026 Potomac River Shape-Note Singing Convention! Singing from The Shenandoah Harmony and The Sacred Harp (2025)--both books all day, in alternating sessions.

Saturday, April 11th, 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; registration begins at 10:00 a.m. Church of the Ascension Silver Spring Parish Hall, 633 Sligo Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

Please bring a dish to share for a potluck dinner (lunch) on the grounds around 12:30 p.m. Note: microwave available, but no oven.

The April 2026 Gospel Sing will take place at the Maryland Meadworks, 4700 Rhode Island Avenue, Suite Bee, Hyattsville MD 20781. Group singing for two hours, from 4 - 6 pm. Hymnals provided. Everyone is welcome, but be sure you are symptom-free.

Maryland Meadworks, or "Hyattsville's Living Room," is a warm and homey venue and a great supporter of community music events of all kinds, and we're excited to partner with them for April's Gospel Sing. Free parking is available on nearby side streets and at the skate park across the street, and the P1X and P10 buses stop right at the corner. Outside food and snacks are welcome, but patrons are respectfully requested not to bring outside drinks; a variety of tasty meads and nonalcoholic drinks are available for purchase.

The Takoma Park Old-Time Jam is again at Busboys and Poets in Takoma, DC, the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Trio Sefardi celebrates the musical heritage of the exiled Jews of Spain, the Sephardim, with songs in Ladino about love and courtship, holidays and hope. Trio members Susan Gaeta (vocals/guitar), Tina Chancey (bass viol/ Renaissance violin/rebec/Pontic lyra) & Howard Bass (guitar/lute) are dedicated to bringing the vibrant past into the living present and to continuing the musical traditions of those who created and sustained Sephardic song traditions over the centuries. Formed in 2010, the trio draws on experience in folk music, jazz, early music and the influence of their mentor, the Bosnian‐born Sephardic singer/composer Flory Jagoda (1923 – 2021).

40th Annual Washington Spring Ball (English Country Dance) (16 May 2026)

Come join us for a fabulous time! Doors open at 7:00 pm, dancing starts at 7:30.

The Washington Spring Ball is a joyful yearly event of English Country Dancing to glorious music. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

The band for the ball this year will be Karen Axelrod (keyboard), Audrey Jaber (violin), and Miranda Weinberg (violin)

We have a practice session the day of the ball, where most of the dances will be taught. Attending the practice session is strongly encouraged but not required. In the evening at the ball, all dances will be briefed (talked-through) and then prompted for the first few rounds. Dancers wear what makes them feel happy and festive; some choose attire from the 18th or 19th century.

Afternoon practice session from 2:00 - 5:00 pm on the day of the ball, at the Civic Building , which is included in the admission fee. The practice session will be called by Anna Rain with music by Liz Donaldson on piano and Elke Baker on fiddle.

The Takoma Park Old-Time Jam is again at Busboys and Poets in Takoma, DC, the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

The slow jam is 7:30-8pm or so and then we'll fast jam til 9:45pm. This jam is open to all skill levels and instruments. Please come with whatever you play!

Busboys and Poets have generously agreed to host our crazy crew so please come out and join the fray. Please make sure to support the venue by buying some food or drink!

The Grapevine is spoken word performance for adults and teens, celebrating the timeless art of the story, hosted by storytellers Renée Brachfeld and Tim Livengood.

ABOUT OUR TELLERS:

Don White brings laughter and tears as a storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter. There is no one-word description for what Don White does. His work is infused by experience as a husband, a father, a seeker, and a joker. He draws inspiration from his family, in a touching song about the circle of life or an uproarious story about dealing with his daughter. Candace Wolf is a master storyteller and oral historian. She is the barefoot storyteller due to her fearless determination to travel all roads, to all destinations, to expand her treasury of myth and oral history Candace has deployed storytelling skills to contribute to social well-being, emotional health, and cultural enrichment of youth and seniors, urban and rural. She was a long-time performing and teaching artist with the Kennedy Center.
